I Fixed My Power-Outage Internet Problem for Under 5 AZN
// 2 min read
One of the most frustrating things — and it happened again today — is when the power cuts out while you’re in the middle of something and your internet dies with it. You end up having to switch to mobile data every time, which isn’t really a solution.
I started looking into fixes and came across USB-to-DC cables. The concept: plug the USB end into any power source (powerbank, laptop, etc.) and the DC end into your router. When the power goes out, the router keeps running. Works fine for setups with a single modem.
The tricky part is for Katv users — they need two devices running simultaneously. I reached out to Katv and they confirmed it’s not possible to run their setup on a single modem.
I shelved the idea since I only had one cable. But today the power went out again while I had work to do, and I got frustrated enough to just figure it out.
My solution: cut the connector off an old modem adapter, split the USB-to-DC cable in two, grabbed two connector wires (black and white), joined positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative on one side, connected the USB cable on the other side.
Result: both devices running perfectly on one cable. ✨
The optimization — my powerbank outputs 5V, the USB booster steps it to 12V, and with two endpoints both devices run on that single 5V input. This whole thing cost me 5 AZN (powerbank was a prize from a competition). A proper UPS for this usually runs 60-80 AZN — so I saved 55 AZN. 🥸
